Minecraft 1.8.9 Server Download

Minecraft 1.8.9, released December 9, 2015, is the most popular PvP server version in Minecraft history.

The reason is a single mechanic: 1.8 uses a click-based combat system with no attack cooldown, meaning weapon speed depends entirely on how fast a player clicks. Minecraft 1.9 replaced this with a cooldown-based system that fundamentally changed the feel of PvP combat. Most competitive PvP players strongly prefer the 1.8 mechanic.

The result is that Hypixel, the largest Minecraft server network in the world, still runs its PvP game modes on 1.8.9 combat mechanics to this day. Hundreds of minigame, faction, and KitPvP servers continue to target 1.8.9 specifically. Many of these servers use plugins like ViaVersion to allow 1.9+ clients to connect while keeping 1.8 combat physics.

If you're building any kind of competitive PvP server, 1.8.9 is likely what your players expect.

Note: 1.8.9 requires Java 8, but due to the version still being so popular, many plugins do still support 1.8 servers.
