Minecraft 1.20.4, released December 7, 2023, is a critical security and stability patch for the 1.20 Trails & Tales update cycle. It addressed a significant vulnerability in the game's networking layer and is required for any server that ran 1.20.2 or 1.20.3. Mojang strongly recommended all server operators upgrade to 1.20.4 immediately upon its release.

For players, 1.20.4 includes the full Trails & Tales feature set: Cherry Blossom biomes, Archaeology, Armor Trims, Camels, the Sniffer, and Bamboo Wood blocks. It was the dominant survival server version throughout early-to-mid 2024 and has excellent support across Paper, Purpur, Fabric, and Forge.
